Mathew S. Maurer, MD

Dr. Maurer studied in a combined B.S. and M.D. program at The CCNY Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education, which included an M.D. from Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He completed training in internal medicine and cardiology at NewYork Presbyterian Hospital (NYP) and was Chief Medical Resident.

Dr. Maurer is a general internist and geriatric cardiologist with advanced training in heart failure and cardiac transplantation. He is a Professor of Clinical Medicine at Columbia University, where he directs the Clinical Cardiovascular Research Laboratory for the Elderly (CCRLE) at Allen Hospital/NYP.  Dr. Maurer is a member of the Advanced Cardiac Care Center at NYP – Columbia Campus.

Dr. Maurer’s work focuses on evaluating age related changes in cardiovascular physiology to elucidate the mechanisms underlying a higher prevalence and incidence of cardiovascular disease in older individuals. He has especially focused on these geriatric cardiovascular syndromes: (1) Syncope (fainting), falls and their relationship to disordered blood pressure regulation and (2) Heart failure in the setting of a normal ejection fraction, (3) Aortic stenosis and (4) Cardiac amyloidosis. He has received funding from the National Institute on Aging for his research activities.
